Peyronie’s Disease

To heal is to be yourself again.

Have you noticed a curvature, pain, or change in your penis? Peyronie’s Disease can cause both physical and emotional discomfort, affecting confidence, intimacy, and sexual life. But you don’t have to face it alone. With early diagnosis and comprehensive treatment, most cases improve significantly or resolve, restoring sexual function and self-esteem.

WHAT IS PEYRONIE´S DISEASE?

Real recovery for your intimacy.

Peyronie’s Disease is a disorder in which scar tissue, known as a plaque, forms in the tunica albuginea of one or both corpora cavernosa of the penis. This condition can cause pain during erection, especially in the early stages, and over time may lead to penile curvature that can make penetration difficult or even impossible.

The disease typically develops in two phases:

Acute Phase:

Plaque formation

Pain during erection

Progression of curvature

Chronic Phase:

Plaque consolidation

Curvature stabilization

Decrease in pain

Persistence of deformity

Although it has been recognized for centuries, the exact cause is not fully understood. Early diagnosis is therefore essential for effective management, allowing for better outcomes in sexual function and the patient’s emotional wellbeing.

ESTIMATED 3% TO 9% OF MEN DEVELOP SOME FORM OF PEYRONIE’S DISEASE IN THEIR LIFETIME.

When to Get Professional Help

Pain During Erection

Sharp or bothersome pain when initiating or maintaining an erection, which does not subside over time, may indicate the active phase of the disease.

Noticeable Penile Curvature

If your penis curves during an erection, especially if it makes penetration difficult or causes discomfort to your partner, it is a sign of structural involvement.

Difficulty with Penetration

When the curvature or deformity prevents full sexual intercourse or causes significant discomfort, it is time to seek evaluation.

Emotional Impact and Sexual Anxiety

Feelings of shame, isolation, low self-esteem, or fear of sexual activity that persist require intervention to protect your psychological and sexual wellbeing.

If you recognize one or more of these signs, early evaluation can make a significant difference.

Most Common Causes

Peyronie’s Disease is multifactorial, and there is not always a single identifiable cause. Understanding the factors that contribute to the development of the disease helps achieve a more accurate diagnosis and select the most appropriate treatment. Most cases result from a combination of medical, lifestyle, and psychological factors.

Medical Factors:

  • Repeated microtraumas: Small injuries to the penis during sexual activity or accidents that do not cause immediate damage but, when accumulated, lead to abnormal scarring.
  • Genetic predisposition or connective tissue abnormalities: Some men are more susceptible to plaque formation due to hereditary traits or issues with collagen and tissue elasticity.
  • Advanced age: As men age, tissues become less elastic and cellular repair decreases, promoting plaque formation

50-60%

Lifestyle Factors:

  • Intense or vigorous sexual activity: Vigorous sexual activity or positions that place excessive pressure on the penis can cause repeated microtraumas.
  • Sedentary lifestyle or low physical activity: Lack of exercise affects circulation and tissue regenerative capacity, hindering the natural repair of the penis after minor injuries

25-30%

Psychological Factors:

  • Chronic stress or anxiety: Prolonged stress increases muscle tension and can heighten pain perception. It also affects libido and sexual response, making disease management more challenging.

10-20%

These figures are estimates, since most cases of Peyronie’s disease result from a combination of factors acting together.

Comprehensive Medical Evaluation

Early detection of Peyronie’s disease is essential to provide effective treatment and minimize the progression of curvature or plaque consolidation. Diagnosis requires a comprehensive evaluation, combining physical examination, complementary studies, and assessment of emotional and sexual impact. This approach allows for identifying the disease phase, the severity of the curvature, and the specific needs of each patient, ensuring a personalized treatment plan.

Medical and Sexological Treatment

Peyronie’s disease is treatable, and the most effective approach combines medical intervention with sexological support. While medical treatment focuses on reducing plaque, correcting curvature, and managing pain, sexological therapy addresses the emotional impact, anxiety, communication with the partner, and the gradual reintegration of sexual activity. Combining both approaches ensures better outcomes in sexual function and the patient’s psychological wellbeing.

Medical Treatment

  • Clinical Observation: Recommended for mild curvatures without pain or difficulty maintaining sexual intercourse.
  • Non-Surgical Treatments:
    • Intralesional injections of medications, including Xiaflex® (Collagenase)

    • Traction devices to improve penile alignment and reduce curvature.

    • Shockwave therapy to stimulate neovascularization and plaque resorption.

    • Anti-inflammatory medications as prescribed to relieve pain and inflammation.
  • Surgery: Recommended when curvature or deformity prevents penetration or affects erectile function.

    • Corrective surgeries for curvature

    • Placement of penile prosthesis.

  • Monitoring and Follow-Up: Continuous evaluation of curvature, pain, sexual function, and response to non-surgical treatments, ensuring safety and effectiveness.

Sexological Treatment

  • Psychoeducation: Clear explanation that the condition is medical, treatable, and not the patient’s fault; normalizing the situation and reducing catastrophic thinking.

  • Grief and Acceptance Work: Expression of pain, frustration, and anger; gradual transition toward acceptance of the condition and redefining masculine identity beyond the “perfect penis.”

  • Sexual Anxiety Management: Techniques including breathing exercises, relaxation, mindfulness, and gradual desensitization to sexual contact.

  • Cognitive Restructuring: Replacing negative thoughts with realistic and treatable perceptions (“I have a treatable condition,” “We can work through this with my partner”).

  • Gradual Sexual Re-exposure: Reexploration of intimacy without pressure for penetration, adapting sexual activity to the patient’s comfort and capabilities.

  • Couples Therapy: Open communication, partner education, resolution of resentments, shared exploration of what works, and establishment of practical strategies.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

We want you to experience this process with peace of mind.

Penile curvature is a common anatomical variation, and in most cases, it is completely normal. Approximately 10-15% of men have some degree of physiological curvature without it being a pathology.
However, when the curvature is progressive, causes pain during erection, or significantly interferes with penetration, it may be an indicator of Peyronie’s disease—a condition in which scar tissue forms inside the penis after microtraumas.
For an accurate diagnosis and treatment options—including oral medication, intra-lesional injections, and shockwave therapy—call our Center for a precise medical evaluation.

Yes, it’s possible penile curvature is related to a partner’s discomfort during intercourse. Each partner’s anatomy is different, and what worked well with previous partners may not be optimal with your current partner for various reasons: differences in vaginal anatomy (depth, elasticity, sensitivity), angle of penetration depending on position, or simply specific anatomical incompatibility.

However, your girlfriend’s pain during penetration could be due to multiple causes that are NOT related to your curvature. If the curvature really is the main problem, options such as shockwave therapy, medication, or in severe cases corrective surgery can be considered.

The fundamental approach is honest communication with your partner and medical evaluation of both you and your partner to determine cause and treatment. Call us to get a complete evaluation.

Many men do achieve satisfying sexual relationships. According to some studies, 40-70% of men develop concomitant erectile dysfunction, but with successful treatment, many recover function. Even without complete correction, some positions accommodate the curvature.

Most couples stay together; breakups occur mainly due to lack of communication, lack of support, or difficulties dealing with stressors. Couples who communicate and work together generally emerge stronger.

At our center, Dr. Yaz, sexologist and psychologist, helps couples improve communication when a condition like this begins to affect the relationship.

It’s better to communicate than to hide. Your partner will eventually notice it during sexual relations. Hiding it amplifies anxiety and causes emotional disconnection.

Choose a private moment without pressure, explain honestly what it is (a medical condition, treatable, not contagious), and express your need for support. Open communication reduces pressure and facilitates support during your treatment.

No. Peyronie’s disease is NOT caused by any particular sexual behavior. The real causes are: genetic predisposition (hereditary), penile trauma (accident, injury), or biochemical scarring factors. It does not mean you did anything wrong or that there is anything wrong with you.
